We interviewed Robert Ban, the Managing Director at Vauni, to delve into the narrative behind the brand and gain insights into their design methodology.
Can you tell us a bit about the history and founding of Vauni?
"Why isn't there a fireplace that is both beautiful, chimney-free, environmentally friendly, easy to use and install?" asked Sören Sjölander, professor emeritus in innovation technology at Chalmers University of Technology, when he had to move from a house to an apartment and was not allowed to install a traditional wood fireplace. What doesn't already exist, you simply have to invent yourself. The first Vauni prototype was developed in collaboration with designer Markus Grip in connection with his degree project at HDK, the University of Design & Crafts. Together, the best of two worlds were united: perfect aesthetics and technical innovation.
How would you describe Vauni's design aesthetic and approach to creating fireplace products?
Vauni's design philosophy is based on fire and what it stands for: warmth, harmony and community. We also start from the user's emotional need for fire. Therefore, we have taken the greatest care in designing our fireplaces so that they suit the changing needs, tastes and living conditions of different people. All materials are selected to harmonize with the values of the fire and express aesthetics, the highest quality and warmth. We are proud of our fireplaces, which are beautiful in the room both extinguished and with a warming fire.
How does Vauni prioritize the balance between form and function in its products?
The form is a conclusion of the function. The shape should not just be for the sake of the shape, so to speak. An example of this is the spherical shape, which facilitates the transfer of heat from inside the fireplace out into the room. Another example is the weight, it should be easy to move around, but at the same time heavy enough to be solid and stable. A third is the integrated heat shield that prevents the outer casing from becoming scorching hot.
Can you share any interesting or quirky behind-the-scenes stories about the creation of a particular Vauni product?
Well, but put it this way. We are often asked why we are comparatively so expensive. In addition to the fact that a lot of thought went into creating a suitable and safe fireplace, it takes a lot of time and resources to make/create something. For example, producing the concrete insert for Globe, that work took 2 years to produce, e.g. the right measurements so that the insert is given room to expand in the heat. For this, the right type of tool/form must be produced, which in itself is a construction job. Another thing is the work with new colors. As the shape is as it is, i.e. rounded and it is a fireplace, you cannot powder coat it however and whatever. It took over 2 years to find just the right one so that it works well on a curved surface and that it withstands heat and looks good in changing light. There have been many occasions when you have found yourself assuming things that later turn out not to be true at all, and this has of course created both instructive and sometimes funny moments.
Can you describe any social or environmental initiatives that Vauni is involved in?
We usually summarize it a bit like this: It's climate smart Burning with bioethanol adds the least (compared to wood or gas) net carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Ethanol, which is the raw material, is produced from a residual product from the food industry. It is environmentally friendly. It does not release substances hazardous to health in the same way as wood or gas. Thus, it does not deteriorate the air environment. We do not burn wood, which means that we can preserve our trees, which are more useful as trees. It is good for health Just as above, burning with wood or gas releases particles that are harmful to health. In Sweden alone, and depending on which study you look at, around 700 people die each year as a result of health effects linked to fireplace fires. Burning with an efficient bio fireplace produces carbon dioxide and water vapor comparable to a person's exhaled air. In addition to this, we keep all manufacturing in Sweden, which is something we are proud of. We want to protect the manufacturing culture that Sweden is known for and support it wholeheartedly. In connection with the launch of a new web, we will offer some kind of solution where part of the income goes to x number of environmental projects.
